The Steps Leaders Must Take in Order to Thrive into the Next Decade – Susan Inouye, Executive Coach

On today’s show, we’re pleased to welcome Susan Inouye, executive coach, leading expert with millennials and best-selling and award-winning author of “Leadership’s Perfect Storm: What Millennials Are Teaching Us about Possibilities, Passion and Purpose.” In this segment, Susan discusses her background in leadership training and coaching as well as the inspiration behind her latest book.

The crux of her methodology comes from the Zulu word “Sawubona”, a traditional greeting which translates to “I see you.” However, the meaning extends beyond the functionality of a simple “hello”; it means I see your importance in the world, and I value your presence. Susan also discusses the current factors that are forcing leaders to change the way they lead. Staying ahead of the curve, ushering in millennials as the new generation of leaders, and facing the fourth industrial revolution are all vitally important for leaders.

In order to thrive in the next decade and beyond, Susan says that leaders must make these following shifts:

  • From Control to Connect and Receive
  • From Conformity to See and Accept
  • From Expectation to Intentions
  • From Authority to Authenticity
  • From Bottom-Line Myopia to Belonging

Intellect is no longer enough for leaders to succeed. They must make these shifts and start seeing the gifts of the next generation.
